Conversion

Our great blessing is that God is a patient gardener. God gives us time for conversion. Conversion is not a one-shot deal. It’s not the image we get of the Christian who has a born-again experience and is suddenly saved. If it were simply a decision we make, an act of the will, we could do it instantly and go on living as we have.

Conversion takes time. Conversion means changing our stance not only toward God, but toward the whole world, toward ourselves, toward our friends and everyone else, toward God’s created universe. This takes time, lots of time. This is really the one task we are given by God, and it takes every minute of our life to do it.

That’s why we need patience, because conversion is not easy. Faith is not easy, even though God is faithful. Faith doesn’t remove difficulties. Faith creates difficulties, because when you commit yourself to God, the testing begins, as Jesus experienced in the desert, where he was tempted to reject God’s word, to bow down to Satan, and to give in to the selfish use of power.

And we are tempted in many of the same ways: to self-seeking, to self-serving power, to individualism, and to so many other forces that would seek to move us away from our commitment to follow the Spirit, who invites us all to union with God in Christ. That’s why conversion takes time.

“Merciful and gracious is the Lord, slow to anger and abounding in kindness.” (Psalm 103:8)
