Partnership

As we look at the conflicts and divisions in our society today and consider how they affect us and those close to us, what can we do to promote gospel values and follow the Lord’s way? I’m going to suggest three things you can do to practice peace-making. Consider it a homework assignment. You can grade yourself on it.

First, pray for an enemy or for someone you don’t like or someone you have deep disagreements with. Not an easy thing to do, is it? And that’s not me. That’s Jesus. “Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you.” (And it should be a prayer for their well-being, not their demise!) Try it. See what it’s like. It must have some benefit, right? I’d be interested in hearing about your experiences with this prayer.

Second, consider what changes in behavior God is asking you to make to bring more light, peace, and kindness into the world. God depends on us to make these changes to bring about a greater sense of community and common purpose.

Third, the next time you feel like judging someone negatively, give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe there’s a good reason for their behavior that you’re not aware of. So these three things: pray for an enemy; practice kindness; give someone the benefit of the doubt. The bottom line is that God wants to transform the world with us as partners. How can we pass up that invitation?

“The God of Jacob keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry.” (Psalm 146:6)
