The work of the Kingdom

The work of the Kingdom is God’s work. That is clear. But it’s our work as well. That’s the beauty and the challenge of our faith—to participate with God in the building up of God’s Kingdom on earth. God’s actions are meant to become our actions as well, even, and especially, if only in small ways.

To the pain and disorder and social isolation that Jesus encounters in his ministry, he brings order, unity, and peace. That doesn’t mean that all the bad stuff goes away, we know that, but that God gives us a way through it all. God is revealed in our lowliness, our failures, and our suffering, as well as in our joy.

The tricky thing in all this is how to translate the teachings of Jesus into our daily life. How do we live our Christian life in the light of Christ’s Spirit, as we face the many challenges of today?

We pay attention to the presence of God within us. What does God appear to be saying to us in a situation? How do we know our actions are from God and will lead to where we want to go? We look at the good effects of our decisions—the fruits of the Spirit, as St. Paul tells us? And we know that the Lord walks with us along the way.

“Did not God choose those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he promised to those who love him?” (James 2:5)
