GPS

Is God the divine GPS we follow? Maybe in some ways. God does point out the way we should live our life and what values we should have. God adjusts to our changes of course or getting lost to get us back on the right path. God does warn us of obstacles in living according to God’s Spirit.

But, unlike the GPS, there is a moral dimension to God’s directions. The GPS doesn’t look at things from a moral perspective or even from the viewpoint of common sense, it’s just programmed to get you there—purely utilitarian. Our faith gives us a moral perspective to judge things by and to plot our course in life.

There is also a relationship of love between me and God. I don’t think too many of us are in love with our GPS devices, and, if we are, the feeling isn’t mutual.

As with any image of God, the GPS analogy is ultimately lacking, because God is not a machine, but a living being who interacts lovingly with us on a daily basis to lead us along the path of life. It’s up to us to trust the way we are being led.

“Say to those whose hearts are frightened: Be strong, fear not! Here is your God, he comes with vindication.” (Isaiah 35:4)

Fr. Ron, Thanks for another great collection of photos. Two phrases resonate from your narrative “moral perspective” and “common sense”. Two things that seem woefully lacking in many of our fellow countrymen. Lynn

I agree. Let’s hope we can make some progress on those fronts.
