A Trinity of love

The loving inter-relationship of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit gives us a way to think about God and also to understand our role in the unfolding of creation, because, as the Bible tells us in the book of Genesis, we are made in the image and likeness of God. So that divine dynamic tells us something about who we are and who we are intended to be, as we are welcomed into this divine mystery.

We get a good look at what God is like in the person of Jesus, who is God incarnate in the world, and through the presence of the resurrected Christ in our life: a God who stays with us in our struggles; a God who in the person of Jesus says, “I am with you always,” and sends out his disciples to baptize others and bring them into the inner life of God.

We might reflect in gratitude on the right and loving relationships in our life, those people who help us to see God’s love and goodness, and who are a blessing to us. We might reflect on our call to look honestly at all our relationships and work to heal and reconcile any divisions, where we can.

As I see it, our real challenge is not so much to understand the nature of God, as it is to live in loving relationships with others, with God, and with all of creation, in compassion and justice and peace–a relationship that is dynamic, living, always there, a relationship of love. This is our great challenge, and this is our great blessing–to live as we have been created, in the image and likeness of our triune God.

“Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, until the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)
