The nativity of Jesus is a celebration both of fragility and strength–both God’s and ours. By entering into the human condition God takes on the fragility of our human nature, as seen in the newborn baby. As that baby grows and matures, we see the strength of God’s Spirit with him. By becoming human, God blesses our human frailty with a loving presence and gives us the strength we need to be faithful to our call to live in the spirit of Christ.
Our world is in darkness in many ways. Christ is our light. Our world is broken. Christ is our healing. The world has lost its way. Christ is our roadmap.
Certainly we desire a world that is better than what it is. The birth of Jesus gives us hope that in the midst of darkness and hardship, God can bring peace and hope for a more grace-filled life, as the Spirit of Jesus urges us forward to carry God’s love and care for all creation.
Advent is over, but in some ways we are still waiting, and God is still waiting for us. May this Christmas season be a time for us to wake up more fully to God’s presence in our life and to God’s call to be people of hope, people who respond whole-heartedly to all God asks of us, people who embrace the fragility of human condition with the strength of God’s presence.
“And the Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us, and we saw his glory, the glory as of the Father’s only Son, full of grace and truth.” (John 1:14)

I believe we are still waiting. It is part of the reason why we are anxious. We await the Lord, but there is so much darkness…so much evil. It is sad. Christmas should bring peace, but we are still waiting.
