Faith in action

What is faith? We treat it like a possession, but it’s not about what we have, and it’s not only about what we believe, but it’s how we live our life. Faith is more like a verb. Faith is an action word. It’s a noun that acts like a verb!

For what faith means, we look to how Jesus lived. What would be some of the things that characterized Jesus’ life and work? What was important to him? Various things come to mind: his mother, his disciples, the poor, healing the sick, encouraging others (Don’t be afraid!) praying, teaching, dying to self, love of his Heavenly Father. Knowing all this, what does this tell us about having faith in Jesus?

It involves paying attention to how God is working in us, paying attention to what is going on in the world, on a local or wider level, and then acting in a way that promotes peace, community, and justice for everyone, mirroring the values that Jesus lived out in his own life.

It all starts with faith in the person of Jesus, who asks each one of us, “Who do you say that I am?” Our answer to that question will have a big effect on who we become and how we will influence our world.

“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?…faith of itself, if it does not have works, is dead.” (James 3:14,17)
