Wonder

There are times when I am out with my camera and I am just struck with wonder at the beauty, the complexity, and the simplicity of creation.

I might be walking along the water’s edge looking out at the ships passing by silently. Or I might be wandering through a garden, or walking on rocks by the sea, or observing the architecture of interesting buildings, or noticing the details of weeds growing by the roadside.

Some people specialize in a certain type of photography, such as landscapes, portraits, street photography, macro, black and white, astro, long exposure, etc. I haven’t developed a signature look to my images, because I’m drawn to many types of photography. The world is infinitely interesting and offers infinite possibilities for expressing our experience of the world photographically. Why should I limit myself?

To approach the world with this type of open and receptive attitude is key not only to my photography, but also to my spirituality. God’s self-revelation can come to us through our senses (how else?). As I intentionally tune in to the world around me, and as I tune in to the Scriptures in prayer, I am able to get a sense of how God is at work in my life. This too is an occasion for wonder and gratitude.

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the human heart conceived, what God has prepared for those who love him. These things God has revealed to us through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.”    (I Corinthians 2:9-10)

  1. Dear Father Ron, Beautiful photos! Living and working down the shore. The new SC house is going up, up, up and we can’t wait to get in this next year! Heading off on a cruise to Italy and Greece this Thanksgiving week into the first week of December. So exciting. How are you doing? Happy summer. Hope to see you soon. xo Susan & Tom
