One area of photography that I find attractive is macro or closeup photography, focusing in on the minute details of objects. Putting a macro lens on my camera encourages me to narrow my focus and pay attention to the intricate beauty and order of the world–both the world of nature and the man-made world.
As a result of this type of photography, I become aware of how much I don’t see, as I go about my daily routine. It’s a type of spiritual practice to be intentional about noticing the details of the world around me, to immerse myself in them, and appreciate them as a reflection of the order and beauty of God.
Growing in spiritual maturity also involves noticing interior details of how the spirit of God is moving me to a deeper love and a stronger commitment to living out the values of Jesus. It’s getting in touch with the inner Spirit. Paying attention to the outer world leads me to pay attention to the world within.
“Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin, yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these.” Matthew 6:28-29
