Humility II

Trappist monk Bernard Bonowitz defines humility as accepting the truth of ourselves, the truth about our neighbors, and the truth about God. Humility is about accepting the truth. And there are four parts to this truth, as he describes it. First, we are created in God’s image and likeness, so we are spiritual creatures capable of knowing and loving and oriented toward God.

Secondly, we depend on receiving God’s love, so we are in relationship with God.

Third, human nature is both the loss of God through sin and the recuperation of God through repentance.

Lastly, the truth about our neighbor is that God loves everyone else just as much as God loves you. Chew on that for a while. God loves everyone else just as much as God loves you.

“I am the light of the world, says the Lord. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” (John 8:12)
