Spiritual environment

Different interpretations of Jesus’ words and different religious sensibilities, along with our tendency to vilify anyone who disagrees with us has led to the straining and fracturing of family relationships in our country. People aren’t speaking to one another because of political differences, often with both sides justifying their position with their religious faith. This is not the sense of community, common purpose, and concern for the common good that Jesus called us to.

In fact, I think it’s generally recognized that as a nation we’re suffering from a decrease in a sense of community, social connections, and overall satisfaction with life. A recent Gallup survey of people in 142 countries showed a rise in the number of people who are thriving and a drop in those who are struggling or suffering. In the US and other nations with high standards of living, however, the percentage of those thriving is actually dropping. We are doing fine economically, but our social and spiritual environments are deteriorating. Young people today are particularly affected.

The overall sense is that we have focused so much on economic success that we’ve neglected the social and moral development that contributes to our overall well-being and flourishing.

We have lost the fire that Christ has brought into the world to bring us together, to value one another, to care for one another, and to see God’s presence in all of our brothers and sisters.

“With the Lord there is mercy; in him is plentiful redemption.” (Psalm 130:7)

I am frequently horrified by morals today. I know, I sound like an old person (and I am not,) but the lack of respect is troubling. If you have no respect for someone, it makes it that much easier to think they are expendable if they don’t agree with you. I cannot condone that! What happened to “I don’t agree with you, but we can still be friends?” When did it become “My way or the highway?”

The division in society today is very troubling. We have to keep preaching and living the call to unity which is at the heart of Jesus’ teaching.
