Peter had given up his faith by denying Jesus three times. He then affirms Jesus three times. This poses a question, Why did Jesus choose Peter, when he could have chosen the beloved disciple or someone else to feed his sheep? Why Peter, who had denied him?
Perhaps it’s because, like the prodigal son, Peter had returned to Jesus and would understand those sheep who have a difficult time staying with the flock and wander off. He would know that it is not he, but the Lord who saves.
That understanding would give him a humility that would help him be a true servant of God’s people, because the office of Peter is primarily one of service. These were the Lord’s final instructions to Peter: “Feed my sheep.” The pastoral nature of the position is very clear: care for God’s people.
Carrying out those instructions were an important part of Pope Francis’ ministry these last 12 years, as he sought to bring people back to the church, the big tent, as he referred to it, with room for everyone.
“Cry out with joy to God, all the earth; O sing to the glory of his name. O render him glorious praise, alleluia.” (Psalm 66:1-2)
