Imagination in prayer

One way of praying with the gospels is to imagine yourself in a gospel story. One example would be praying with the story of crowds of people converging on Jesus by the lake to be healed of their illnesses. Jesus has a boat ready to avoid being crushed by the large number of people trying to touch him.

What role would you play in this story? Would you be one of the disciples concerned about Jesus’ safety? One of the people just cured by Jesus? One of the unlucky ones who failed to reach him?

Our role in the story can tell us something about ourselves and our relationship to God. Do we feel closely connected to Jesus as a disciple? Do we feel we have been cured or healed from something that was troubling us? Do we feel the need for the healing power of Jesus in our life?

Praying with the Scriptures in this way opens up possibilities for us in our relationship with the Lord and can give a focus to our prayer, as we pray to be faithful disciples, grateful for God’s blessings, asking for the healing we need, trusting in God’s love for us.

“He had cured many, and, as a result, those who had diseases were pressing upon him to touch him.” (Mark 3:10)
