Freedom

One of the great themes of our faith is growing in the freedom of the children of God. The course of salvation history can be looked at as the progression from slavery to freedom, from sin to redemption, from fragmentation to unity. This has not been a linear progression, but steps forward and steps backward, and we can see these themes playing out today in our world and even, if we look closely, in our own life.

One of the great stories of the call and movement to freedom is the story of Moses responding to the Spirit of God and leading God’s people out of Egypt to the Promised Land.

Moses leads the People of God out of captivity and into freedom. This is also our work and our call as followers of Jesus—to move from the smallness of our lives to a greater freedom.

They were able to make that journey because God walked with them. Time and again they were tempted to give up, but God continued to walk with them and encouraged them to continue and to help each other along the way. God continues to walk with and encourage us, as we make our own journey from the slavery of sin and selfishness to the freedom and unity of the children of God.

“The LORD came down in the cloud and spoke to Moses. Taking some of the spirit that was on Moses, the LORD bestowed it on the seventy elders; and as the spirit came to rest on them, they prophesied.” (Numbers 11:25)

I’m thankful for the gift of freedom, a gift most difficult to realize…and thank you Fr. Ron for the gift of spirit in nature which leads (eventually) to such freedom. 🙏
