True leadership

Jesus says, “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” This is certainly a counter-cultural message, one that our achievement-focused society does not want to hear.

True leadership is not about the leader. It’s about those being led. Servant leadership, the kind modeled by Jesus, is selfless and focused on the needs of the group. Isn’t that something we need today—a concern for the common good? I think so.

Who are the leaders you most admire, whether in the corporate world, or civic life, or religious life? Aren’t they the leaders who demonstrate a genuine care for those under their charge? They are the ones who make a positive difference in the world. Their philosophy is: it’s not about me. It’s about us.

One of the great Christian virtues is hope, and I think hope is needed today. Hope is the belief that love will prevail over hate, that the spirit of Christ’s love will lead us along the path of life and ultimately overcome all that is evil. That’s the message, the good news, of the Resurrection. Our call as followers of Christ is to live in that hope and to let the hope of love’s victory enter into everything that we do, a love that embraces all of God’s people in a spirit of unity in imitation of Christ, who gave his life for us all, that we might be one, as he and the Father are one, that all creation might be one.

“Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but the One who sent me.” (Mark 9:37)

Fr. Ron, Thanks for another great selection of photos and for your reflections on leadership. How could so many of our fellow citizens not see that Trump is the antithesis of all of the values of a good leader? You may treat this question as rhetorical, since we are all sick of “beating that dead horse”. I hope that all is well with you. All best, Lynn
