The parables depict a new reality in which we respond to God’s generosity to us in a life of community, of reaching out to support those in need, and of taking care of our common home. The parables invite us to the realization that we are already in the Kingdom of God.
Jesus has promised us only two things: a share in his suffering and a share in his glory. He doesn’t promise success. This is a hard lesson for us, given the success-oriented society we live in, where our self-worth is tied to how successful we are, and failure is not to be tolerated.
Perhaps we need to redefine success and self-worth from a Christian perspective and focus more on Christ’s journey as a model and invitation for our own journeys and our journey together as God’s people.
Creating and supporting community and caring for our common home are ways we can take part in the Christian journey, reflecting the values that Jesus lived when he walked among us and continues to live in the Spirit’s presence in our life.
“The Kingdom of God is like a net thrown into the sea, which collects fish of every kind.” (Matthew 13:47)
