The journey

The spiritual journey is often a journey from the head to the heart. Many of us started out learning about the faith through CCD or catechism class, or maybe from our parents at home.

We picked up ideas and understandings from homilies or discussions about faith. In other words, we were forming our ideas and beliefs about God, church, faith, salvation, etc.–all very much activities of the brain.

At some point we needed to make, or maybe need to make, the journey from the head to the heart. It’s one thing to know that my parents love me, but it’s another thing to actually feel it.

In the same way, it’s one thing to know intellectually that God loves me. We hear it spoken of and preached about many times over the course of our life. But has that knowledge made the journey from my brain to my heart? Is God’s love for me so real that I can feel it? Because that’s the love that Jesus offers us and invites us to receive.

“We have come to know and to believe in the love God has for us.” (I John 4:16)
