Two Standards

St. Ignatius in his Spiritual Exercises talks about what he calls the Two Standards, as in two flags. In this scenario there are two kings, one representing Christ and the spirit of good, and the other representing Satan and the spirit of evil. We are each called to choose which banner, which standard, to follow.

In the life of each one of us there is a battle between good and evil going on, a type of interior civil war, and our task in life is to follow the standard of Christ, which involves discerning what is good and what the Lord asks of us and doing it.

St. Paul also speaks of this interior battle in his letter to the Galatians, where he talks about the results of following the evil spirit as being immorality, idolatry, outbursts of anger, selfishness, hatred, factions, and so on; whereas the fruits of the Holy Spirit in our life include love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, and self-control. It’s these fruits of the Spirit that we strive to experience and grow in.

I think the important thing for us is to be aware that both good and evil have their attraction. Of course, when evil is attractive, it appears to be a good thing, when deep down we know it isn’t. It’s through prayer and reflecting on the message of Jesus and how we are living that message that we grow in the fruits of the Spirit.

“Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters.” (Luke 11:23)

Late fall photographs – grounded leaves of brown and leaves of golden yellow both reflecting light of the low sun in expectation of the winter solstice. White Oak, American Beech, a Maple or two, and a Downy Woodpecker. I expect it was a walk in the Larsen Sanctuary.

Beautiful and thought-provoking, as usual. People do tend to forget that there is a battle going on! The thing is, God can take any situation and use it for good. So even if we make the wrong choice, He can right it. I take great comfort in that!
