Hypocrites

Jesus occasionally shows anger at the Pharisees and scribes, who were the religious leaders of his day. His complaint is that they had the appearance of being good people, but really weren’t. They pretended to have the interests of the people at heart, but really didn’t.

They insisted that the people observe their religious laws very strictly, but they felt free to ignore them. They pretended to honor the prophets who preached God’s word, but they themselves were focused on self-interest.

Jesus was all about living the truth, being who you say you are and being all that God calls you to be. Perhaps that’s a question for us to think about. Who is God calling you to be as a human being?

The call of our Catholic and Christian faith is to be a disciple, a follower of Christ. And Jesus sent out his disciples to do God’s work, to live and preach God’s love, to bring peace and healing wherever they found themselves, to lead by serving and by working for the good and well-being of others. This is our call as well.

“Whoever exalts himself will be humbled; but whoever humbles himself will be exalted.” (Matthew 23:12)
