The parable of the mustard seed is the story of a tiny seed that has great growth potential. In fact, mature mustard plants eventually grow into shrubs that in the Holy Land grew as tall as ten feet.
The Christian faith began small, with Jesus, his 12 disciples, and a handful of followers. It experienced a large growth of communities, so much so that the Romans eventually considered them a threat and began to persecute them, and, of course, Christianity would eventually become a major world religion.
Our own experience of God’s Kingdom on earth is perhaps similar to Jesus’ experience, in that today we see around us less of God’s way of life and instead more violence, discrimination, and outbursts of anger and hatred, and Christians being persecuted in many countries.
What we’re asked to do is trust in God’s presence and God’s love and allow ourselves to be planted in God’s soil, trusting that God will bring about growth for the good, both in our own lives and in the world around us.
“Whoever has ears ought to hear.” (Matthew 13:43)
