Quiet days

Summer is a time to take a break from the routine and soak in the warming rays of the sun. It’s vacation time. Students and teachers are on break from school. Many of us take some time away from our jobs during this season. It’s a time to appreciate the bounty of the summer harvest–the sweet corn and vine-ripened tomatoes, fresh fruit and vegetables, and of course ice cream.

Perhaps we travel to the beach or to more far-flung lands. Maybe relaxing at home is our preferred way to spend summer, or visiting with family or friends, or attending summer workshops to develop our hobbies and interests, or delving into our summer reading list. During these days I find that I have more time to devote to making images, which I find helps me to connect on a deeper level with the world around me.

Summer is also the time when many people make a spiritual retreat in order to reconnect on a deeper level with the Spirit of God. My favorite is the Jesuit retreat house directly on the Atlantic Ocean at Eastern Point in Gloucester, MA. The quiet and beauty of the place is palpable. Many people come yearly to enjoy the tranquility and the opportunity to spend a week of quiet prayer and reflection with the help of a skilled guide.

No matter how you choose to spend your summer, may these months be happy and healthy ones for you and for those close to you.

7-4-18-15“Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:29-30
